St. Timothy’s School weaves service opportunities into our schedules and our curriculum, as our students strive to make a positive difference for a variety of communities. We believe our pre-kindergarten through eighth grade model is uniquely effective in preparing students to meet the challenges of the future, and service learning is an essential piece of that preparation.
Service learning is a long-standing tradition in the Lower School and is an important component of our curriculum. St. Timothy’s students take part in a myriad of service projects. In kindergarten students donate a toothbrush when they lose a tooth and place it proudly on the "Tooth Fairy Tree." Second graders assemble care packages for troops serving stateside and overseas. Some grades donate food, books or clothing to the under-served, while other grades visit our special friends at Morningside Assisted Living throughout the year. While projects are a significant aspect of service learning, emphasis is also placed on understanding the importance and impact of service.
Middle School students are active in community service in a variety of ways. Each grade level participates in at least one service project as a group, for example, seventh graders volunteered at the Food Bank of NC and sixth graders made cards and gave them to memory care center residents. Other opportunities are encouraged as well. Our student leadership group, the St. Timothy’s Student Council, chose to collect items for the Salvation Army of Wake County Women and Children's Emergency Shelter. For the last two years, the Student Council as also hosted Stop Hunger Now events, preparing over 10,000 meals each time. Middle School students have helped support a bi-monthly Lunches-to-Go program, spending their recesses making lunches for the short-term residents of the Raleigh Rescue Mission. Each spring, students produce and participate in a talent show to help support a charity of their choosing.
For all service opportunities, we work to support students in developing perspective by learning about context and background about the task they are undertaking and the people they are serving. Truly understanding the work helps to place it in a real-world and more meaningful light, and helps create engaging and thought-provoking conversation before, during, and after each act of service.
Volunteer Service Award
Middle School students who track their volunteer hours earned at school or in the community may be elgibile for the President's Volunteer Service Awards announced at the end of the year.
