Grades 5-8
Middle School is a remarkable time in a young person's life. Students are becoming more independent, more capable, and more aware of the world around them, while still benefiting from the guidance of caring adults who know them well. At St. Timothy's, we embrace this unique stage of development by creating a community where students are challenged academically, encouraged personally, and supported every step of the way.
Our Middle School combines a rigorous academic program with meaningful opportunities for leadership, service, creativity, and personal growth. Small classes and close relationships with teachers allow students to take intellectual risks, ask thoughtful questions, and develop the habits of mind that prepare them for success in high school and beyond. Through advisory, chapel, athletics, the arts, and a wide range of extracurricular opportunities, students discover new interests, strengthen their character, and learn the importance of contributing to something larger than themselves.
As students progress from fifth through eighth grade, they assume increasing responsibility for their learning and for the life of the school. By the time they graduate, they leave St. Timothy's as confident learners, compassionate leaders, and thoughtful young people who are prepared to thrive in high school and to make a positive difference in their communities.
Co-Curricular
Drama
Our Drama program is available to middle school students as an elective. Students take turns as actors, directors, program designers, and in other roles through our classes that encompass all aspects of theater production. Each student enjoys collaboration and creativity, no matter the role. Performances include a fall production on campus designed by students for students and a spring stage production.
Visual Art
Middle school students have the opportunity to take Visual Art as an elective. They will explore many visual arts tools, including photography, brushes, clay, and more. Our goal is to teach techniques and art history as students master the concept of design elements.
Band
Students can participate in one of three band levels: Beginning Band, Symphonic Band, or the more advanced Wind Ensemble. Band practices are held in the morning before school and/or after school. The Band performs in two major concerts per year, a Christmas concert and a spring concert. Every year, select students audition for the North Carolina Bandmasters Association’s All District Band (Central District), and several are usually chosen to audition for the All State Honors Band. The Wind Ensemble also participates in the Concert Band MPA.
Music and Chorus
Middle School Chorus is an optional year-long program for fifth through eighth grades. Practice is twice a week, with additional after-school rehearsals around performances, which include a Christmas tour throughout Raleigh, performances at venues such as the Governor’s Mansion and the Capitol Rotunda, and the St. Timothy’s Band and Chorus Christmas Concert. The annual trip to the Kings Dominion Festival of Music, held in late spring, is another annual highlight.

Religious Studies
As reflected in St. Timothy’s Portrait of a Titan, Religious Studies classes invite students to embrace both faith and reason in their pursuit of truth and meaning. By exploring Christianity, the Episcopal tradition, and diverse world religions, students gain perspective on life’s deepest questions and ethical worldviews. In the process, they build religious literacy and learn to engage the world with curiosity, openness, and integrity.
Technology and Design
Technology transforms student learning and development. At St. Timothy’s School, we strive to develop students who are producers by teaching coding, robotics, and design, resulting in problem-solving and an understanding of engineering principles. Technology also facilitates student collaboration, allowing them to reach their full potential in the modern world. We incorporate technology to increase student access to information, personalize learning experiences, and teach communication skills that prepare them for high school and beyond.
