Our primary goal for first graders is for each child to develop a strong foundation in reading and mathematics. Our first grade program provides the framework for children to develop a love of reading and writing, and to apply mathematical concepts to real-life problems. The students are busy with cooperative projects and multi-sensory learning activities, and they revel in their growing skills and independence. Social studies and science provide opportunities for students to explore their world and the environment. First graders attend weekly co-curricular classes taught by specialist teachers including Art, Music, Library/Media, Imagination Lab, Spanish, Science Lab, and Physical Education.

We continuously reinforce character traits as part of our Character Education program, and first graders are encouraged to be responsible friends.

Current circumstances have led us to reimagine some of our traditions and field trip opportunities, but in a normal year special events for first graders include hosting Donuts with Dads and a Mother's Day Tea. As part of our Study Buddies Program, first graders are paired with fifth graders to do monthly activities. October brings another appearance in the ever-popular Pumpkin Parade. In December, first graders typically have their first opportunity to participate in our annual Christmas Pageant. The girls become angels and the boys are shepherds. Relevant fields trips are scheduled throughout the year, including a fall trip to the North Carolina Farmers' Market and a tour of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Community service projects include visiting residents at a local assisted-living facility.
