Middle School Students Win Scholastic Awards
Posted 02/13/2017 12:49PM

Each year, St. Timothy’s School art teacher Kim Balentine encourages her middle school art students to submit their work to the Scholastic Art Awards, and each year several St. Timothy’s School students win awards. This year is no exception.

Out of over 3,445 entries reviewed by professional art jurors for the Eastern/Central North Carolina Region, 9 STS students received a total of 11 art awards. Six Gold Key awards, the highest bestowed, were awarded to 5 STS students, and four students won Silver Key awards. In addition to her Gold Key award, eighth grader Caroline Davis received the Emerging Visions Award. "This is very unusual," explained Mrs. Balentine, "because this award generally goes to a 12th grader." Caroline was the only middle school student out of 7 students to win a special regional award. The winning artwork will be on display in the Barton College Art Galleries through February 24, 2017.

Scholastic also sponsors a writing contest, and this year was the first year an STS student participated in the writing contest. Seventh grader Sahara Sipple won a Silver Key award for her dramatic script titled “A Backyard Managerie.”
