Academics | Library/Media Center

The Library Media Program at St. Timothy's School has two major goals:

Encourage a lifelong reading habit: This is accomplished through a variety of activities which may include book talks, book groups, author visits, author studies, reading lists, and class visits. These activities are tailored to the needs of readers at all developmental stages.

In support of this goal St. Timothy's School provides a growing Media Center collection that includes a mix of thoughtfully selected print and online resources which offer diverse perspectives, topics, and opinions of interest to the community and are relevant to the curriculum.

Teach the research skills needed for a lifetime of learning: The Media Specialist collaborates with classroom teachers to fully integrate 21st century information literacy skills into the school's academic and extracurricular programs. This collaboration produces students who:

  • Can use any library collection or catalog to find and select appropriate resources.
  • Learn from information in many formats.
  • Responsibly and accurately attribute and cite sources.
  • Know when and how to use scholarly sources, raw data, visual information, and primary and secondary sources for an assignment.
  • Know how to assess, compare and analyze the data they have found, keeping what is appropriate and rejecting the inappropriate.
  • Know when and how to reevaluate and revise their information process.
  • Have learned to consult a teacher-librarian when they need more information.

In short, as a result of their interaction with the library program, students at St. Timothy's School are able to find high quality, relevant information and to make educated, selective, and ethically sound judgments concerning its use. They exhibit the skills, dispositions, responsibilities, and self-assessment strategies that are critical for intellectual inquiry, professional success, and citizenship in a democratic society.
