Literature and Grammar
Literature is a thematic study using novels and selections of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, short stories, and drama. Quarterly book reports are required. Grammar instruction covers the basic parts of speech, verb tenses, types of sentences, and punctuation. Students attend Writer's Workshop in the Computer Lab to write research papers by gathering and organizing ideas to write effective sentences that will express their ideas clearly and concisely. Students are also exposed to many different types of writing such as technical and narrative writing. Editing skills are an essential part of the writing process.
Wordly Wise is a workbook used in middle school to build vocabulary. Students study the definition of words and do exercises using the weekly word list. Exercises include reading paragraphs for comprehension and choosing the correct words to complete sentences.
