Academics | Grades 1-4
Mathematics and reading are the primary focus for students in grades 1-4. Students perform at or above grade level and are homogeneously grouped for math and reading according to academic achievement, developmental readiness, and the speed at which they work.
The language arts program allows students to develop appropriate verbal and written expression. The program includes grammar, writing, spelling and handwriting. Students create and use complete sentences as they learn the correct form and structure for writing letters, paragraphs and stories.
The goal of the social studies program is to allow students to gain an understanding of themselves and their communities through activities that focus on geography, economics and sociology. Map skills, geography study, films, books, written reports and individual projects are used to enhance learning.
The science program teaches basic scientific skills and concepts as a foundation for learning. Both physical and biological scientific concepts are introduced. Instructional materials include lectures, discussions, teacher demonstrations, experiments, field trips and independent research. A weekly visit to the science lab reinforces concepts learned in the classroom.
Rounding out the curriculum for grades 1-4 are enrichment classes that introduce and encourage development of basic skills in art, music, technology, foreign language, and physical education.
This historically strong educational foundation enables students to move smoothly into the middle school curriculum and become successful learners.
