Academics | Jr. Kindergarten
The Jr. Kindergarten Program benefits 4-year-olds, as well as students who have been to our kindergarten evaluation, demonstrate strong readiness skills in many areas, but who need the benefit of an additional year of social, emotional and cognitive growth. The students in the Jr. Kindergarten program enjoy the same opportunities as the kindergarteners for enrichment in physical education, music, library skills, technology, art, Spanish and science lab, as well as field trips and celebrations.
During the course of their Jr. Kindergarten year, students will learn the following reading skills: sound and letter patterns, print awareness, letter recognition, phonetic knowledge, and vocabulary. The Jr. Kindergarteners will learn how to express ideas, ask questions and work on problem solving. They will also begin their math foundation through number recognition, sorting, patterns, and one-to-one correspondence. Visual, auditory and motor skills are also emphasized during the Jr. Kindergarten year.
Though structured in design, this program allows for much play, freedom to choose activities, periods for physical development (both indoors and outdoors), individual help and attention, times for sharing, quiet times, and learning in both small and large groups. Activities are varied, and new experiences offered so that each child will be challenged, though not pushed beyond his stage of readiness for the task.
